Born in Iceland, she lived and studied in Reykjavik until 1935. From 1935 to 1939 she studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and then in Paris (1939). After her return to Iceland, her paintings were featured in several exhibitions, and the National Museum in Reykjavík acquired several of her works. In 1943, a grant from the Icelandic government allowed her to travel to New York to complete her art studies. There she worked under the tutelage of Fernand Léger and Hans Hofmann. During this time she also studied film techniques with Hans Richter. In 1945, she had her first solo exhibition at the New Art Circle (J.B. Neuman Gallery) in New York. That same year she designed the sets and costumes for Stravinsky's The Story of a Soldier, which was performed at Columbia University's Macmillan Theatre under the direction of Mitropoulos. In 1948, she had her second solo exhibition at the New Art Circle. Subsequently, there were many solo exhibitions in different capitals of the world such as Paris, Reykjavik, Brussels (Palais des Beaux-Arts), Copenhagen and Oslo. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions.
