Reverend John Williams Ogden (1859-1936) was born in Batley, Yorkshire, into the family of a Methodist minister who began preaching at the age of 14. Ordained in 1883, Ogden served as a Methodist minister in Northumberland (Alnwick, Tynemouth) and Newcastle. Alongside his ministry, he was an active landscape painter, capturing the scenery of Northern England and Wales. In 1920, he emigrated to Canada and settled in Vancouver. There, he continued his clerical service in various churches (such as the Fairview Baptist Church) and became a prominent figure in the British Columbia arts community. He was well known for his conservative views and his sharp criticism of the modernist "Group of Seven," whose works he considered to be far removed from true art. Ogden exhibited extensively on both sides of the Atlantic: In the United Kingdom: He displayed his works at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and other regional galleries. In Canada: He participated in the annual exhibitions of the B.C. Society of Fine Arts (serving as a member from 1925–1927), as well as at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Vancouver Exhibition Association in the mid-1920s. Ogden is most highly recognized for his dramatic landscapes of the mountains and coastline of British Columbia. He died in Vancouver on October 16, 1936, at the age of 77.
