Italo Josz (1878 -1942).

Oil on canvas, size 97 x 126 cm (38 1/4 x 49 2/3 inches), frame dimensions 116 x 144 cm (45 2/3 x 56 2/3 inches)
Signed and dated lower right.
The female figure has always been among his favorite subjects: his ability to portray it was given by his attendance at the free school of nude painting at the Brera Academy in the early 1900s. He made his debut in 1898 on the city's artistic scene by participating in the exhibitions of Bra and of the Famiglia Artistica - he also participated in the social exhibitions of the Permanente and of the Lombard regional union, and in the Quadriennali and Promotrici of Turin. Interrupted by his participation in the First World War, his artistic career (accompanied by restoration assignments) resumed in 1919 at the National Exhibition of Ferrara and reached the Paris Salon in 1935. In 1936 the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan purchased one of his female figures (Nelda) at the Mostra Sociale Primavera of the Permanente.
