Provenance: Charles F. Thompson was not only a gifted painter but he was an innovator and visionary in the theatre and stage design arts. Upon arriving in Los Angeles in 1910, Thompson went to work as a scenic artist for the Flagg Scenic Company in Hollywood. When Jack Grosh and his brother offered Thompson a job at their scenic company located nearby, Thompson jumped at the chance because the Grosh Scenic Company was a major player in the up and coming movie business in Hollywood. Grosh Scenic Studios was located in the former Charlie Chaplin Studio on Sunset Blvd. where it still remains today. Charles Thompson became one of the most sought after scenic artists in Hollywood but wasn't satisfied with just working for the Grosh family. Charles F. Thompson started his own company and became a successful businessman and entrepreneur on his own. His skillfulness as a painter was equal to his innovative contributions in early twentieth century theatre and stage design.
