Lot Description

Nina Tryggvadottir (1913-1968). 1957. Oil on linen on cardboard, size 20 x 26 cm (7 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches). Frame dimensions 25,5 x 30,5 cm (10 x 12 inches). Signed and dated lower right. (Born in Iceland, she lived and studied in Reykjavik until 1935. Studied from 1935 to 1939 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and then in Paris (1939). After her return to Iceland, her paintings were shown in several exhibitions and the National Museum in Reykjavik bought several of her works. In 1943, a grant from the Icelandic government made it possible for her to go New York to complete her art studies. There she worked under the direction of Fernand Leger and Hans Hofmann. At that time she also studied with Hans Richter techniques of filmmaking. In 1945, she had her first solo show at the New Art Circle (J.B. Neuman Gallery) in New York. The same year she designed the decor and costumes for "L'Histoire du Soldat" by Stravinsky, which was shown at the MacMillan Theatre of Columbia University under the direction of Mitropoulos. In 1948 she had her second solo show at the New Art Circle. Subsequently, there were many solo shows in different capitals of the world, like Paris, Reykjavik, Brussels (Palais des Beaux-Arts), Copenhagen, and Oslo. She also participated in numerous group shows).
