Lot Description

Haim Mendelson (1923-2009). Two Nude Figures, l950s. Oil on canvas, size 36 x 81,5 cm (14 1/4 x 32 inches). A New York painter, etcher, and engraver, Haim Mendelson moved to the city from Poland at the age of three attended the WPA Art School from 1935-36, the American Artists School from 1936-40, Saul Baizerman Art School from 1940-43, and the Educational Alliance Art School in 1946. He began exhibiting his art in Manhattan galleries around 1950 and since then his art has been shown throughout the United States and in Germany. Haim Mendelson's first one-man show took place in New York in 1954. Since that time, he has also participated in group exhibitions at such major galleries as the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Berlin Academy of Fine Art. A full member of the American Society of Contemporary Artists, Mendelson has also received the following awards; Dr. Maury Leibovitz Special Merit Award (1987), Bienalle Malta (1995), Audubon Artist Award (1996) and the Florsheim Foundation Grant (1999). Today the fine art of Haim Mendelson is included in the permanent collections of the Minnesota Museum of Art, Griffiths Art Center, Edwin A. Ulrich Museum, and the Joe and Emily Lowe Foundation.
