Lot Description
Portrait of a Gentleman, 18th century. Pastel on paper, size 28 x 23 cm (11 x 9 inches). Frame dimensions 37 x 32 cm (14 1/2 x 12 2/3 inches). Inscribed illegibly in German to the reverse, roughly translated: Purportedly a count, painted circa 1740, probably in Dresden, similar portraits with the same frame, hang in the Dresden Galerie. Baron Ochs von Lerchenau. Baron Anton Ochs von Lerchenau is a character from the Strauss opera Der Rosenkavalier, although this character is intended to be much younger than the subject of this portrait appears.
Conditions
Not examined outside frame due to concerns for stability of the frame and work. Frame is sealed with numerous nails to the edges of the frame, which are significantly cracked and somewhat loose. Light rubbing visible to pastels from contact with frame.
